No. 68: 2024 Through Nature's Lens
Bioregionalism / Nature's Lens Virtual Course / February Community Potluck / Spring 2024 Retreat / June Farm to Table Dinner / and more!
Happy New Year Regenerative School Community,
How is January opening up for you? What’s the weather like in your corner of the world? Write to us and let us know, we would love to hear from you!
We have been thinking a lot about Bioregionalism since reading about the term in Jenny Odell’s How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy (easy, grounding read to start the year. We recommend the audiobook for sunrise walks).
Bioregionalism is the idea that political, cultural and economic systems are more sustainable and just when organized around naturally defined areas, or “bioregions” (think distinct ecological and geographical areas). Bioregionalism encompasses ideas and practices, such as habitat restoration and permaculture, but largely encourages people to consider themselves as citizens of local nature, local place. Understandably, if we all thought of ourselves as citizens of our nearby mountain, beach, or stream, we might feel more inclined to steward our local ecologies and promote a greater understanding of all beings.
How do you relate to place? What is your place — geographically speaking?
Have you checked out our online course “Nature and Belonging”?
Are you interested in learning more about relating to the natural world around you? Join us January 28th for “Nature’s Lens: Shifting Perspectives,” a virtual LIVE COURSE with Empower With Nature’s Maya Galimidi.
As a small, alternative education collective, we have students and friends scattered all of the world. Our “place” is in community, and our community spans many, many bioregions. So what is our place — geographically speaking? Depends who you ask. Our director is based in Amesbury, MA; our admin specialist is in Fayetteville, TN; our project manager just sailed back to MA from the Caribbean; and our newsletter editor is writing these words to you from Tarragona, Spain (hola!).
As individuals, our staff and community members often connect with one another through our shared love and interest for “place-based” activities and connection. So we are manifesting community and exploration in 2024.
Interested in getting outside in good company, eating soup and talking about the local weather? Stretching through the change of seasons? We’ve got you covered. Keep scrolling for some our upcoming events!
Best,
The Rē Team
