We are preparing for our next community retreat - this time in Tennessee! It's been a while since we've had an offering like this, and gathering together in person feels so important. The retreat will be co-led by Sara Jolena Wolcott and Kristine Hill. The community retreat will be taking place after an in-person board meeting, and it is also serving as a chance for members of our board to get to know some other members of our wider community! Do check out the information below.
We also are excited about this upcoming online "Advent for the Winter Solstice" offering! It promises to be a wonderful way to enter winter- especially for people who are in eastern or mountain time zones!
In the last few months, we've been very much appreciating the work of Land Justice Futures, especially their recent course, the Motherhouse Starter Series.
Their post-election email resonated strongly with us, and so we wanted to share it here. If this kind of thing speaks to you, please consider signing up for their newsletter!
"The election news is devastating. It will have big consequences for so many lives and for the context within which we are building movements and communities for just, liveable, and decolonial futures.
And also, we can remember: we are here to hospice the end of domination, and midwife a world of renewal — a world that is both ancient and deeply rooted, and new and fresh within us. A vision that has been carried and tended by people who have survived attempted genocide and state violence for centuries, carrying the seeds of remembrance and community care — the seeds of societies that honor life — and have planted them again and again. We must join in (or continue!) that planting, in place and in community. We can reckon with the histories that created corrupt systems and culture, we can learn together to be Complicit No More with the stories and structures that have brought us here, and we can walk together towards Mother Law and life-honoring ways of being.
We are not alone and have never been alone. We are a movement of movements. We stand with all mothers, grandmothers, and people of all genders and backgrounds who are here to nurture, protect, heal, and regenerate life. We stand with and as Earth: the unstoppable force of love, the source of our bodies and our lives. As Pat McCabe has told us many times, we can live the assertion that “it is against spiritual law to prevent Mother Earth from giving what any mother would give to any of her children.”
The movements for racial justice, for ecological repair, for the fall of colonization and patriarchy, for land justice are growing stronger and clearer in unprecedented ways every day. They grow and take root amidst the devastation we see as the structures of domination and extraction collapse under their own weight.
Our work together in this Motherhouse series — the collective work of the faculty, theological council, and every one of you who has taken this work to heart — is a part of this midwifery, this renewal, this inevitable rising up.
Let's take heart in the words of Clarissa Pinkola Estes: We were made for these times. Go read the whole essay, if it helps.
As you walk through these days, know that we want you to stay connected to your breath. Drink water, find hugs, and know that we are a part of something rising, something alive, and something vibrant that can never be stamped out. We are part of facing truth, removing complicity, and choosing healing. We are life creating more life. There’s no turning back."
